Start at the door
Walk the path from the house to the yard and note where steps could land. Consider how you’d carry a tray outside or reach a path after dark.
Make room to move
Sketch the approximate footprint of the table, chairs, and grill. Leave room for people to walk around occupied chairs and between the door and stairs.
Describe the existing conditions
If you’re replacing a deck, tell us where you’ve noticed movement or deterioration and which access routes you want to keep. Leave structural assessment to the project review.
